Matariki Festival Preparation at Montessori Centre
We are getting ready for our Matariki Celebration at Learning Links Montessori Centre on Friday the 1st of July. We have been learning waiata, making rakau and poi and just lately, creating whetu to represent the nine stars of Matariki, that you can see in the night sky.
Donna brought in toi toi stalks from her place and Julia found old sewing patterns, as we like to be as sustainable as possible, by re-using resources. We had to measure then cut, five toi toi stalks of equal length for each star, then tape the ends together and fold them into the whetu shape.
Next, we watered down PVA glue and dipped sections of the old patterns into the glue and proceeded to wrap them around the whetu shape. That’s a lot harder than it sounds, as it rips easily, so it took our great teamwork skills to achieve this part. One person would hold the shape whilst the other did the wrapping. Star shapes totally covered and we let them dry. We will add fairy lights to them for added effect. We are looking forward to seeing them twinkle in the night. We really are very crafty!
